“Every child has the right to a home! Adoption, the best possible option available for rehabilitating an orphan or destitute child, is a process by which the child is brought up by a couple as their own son or daughter. Unlike the case of biological children where umbilical cord establishes the bond between parents and children, the love for children determines the bond in adoption”. Opined Ms. Meena Kuruvila, Programme Coordinator, Adoption Coordination Agency, Kerala State Office, while she was speaking in the seminar organized by SAMARITANS of School of Social Work on “Child Adoption and Juvenile Justice Act” on 23 November 2010 as part of adoption Awareness Week Observation which is commemorated nationwide from November 14 (Children’s Day) to November 21.
Students and Faculty of School of Social Work participated in the seminar and raised relevant questions on the roles of social workers in the process of legal adoption. The seminar has brought about clear understanding about the process, principles and shortcomings of legal Adoption in India.
“It was a very good programme to have better understanding about JJ Act and other Adoption laws. We are so fortunate to listen to the process of legal adoption in Kerala and in other parts of the country from a person who has got 17 years of experience in coordinating adoption activities in Kerala”, commented the students who participated in the seminar.
Dr. Anish K.R. (Coordinator), Mr. Ajesh P. Joseph (Faculty) and Ms. Anju Abraham (President, SAMARITANS) also spoke on the occasion.
